My husband saw a restaurant in Sengkang that we really wanted to visit again. We used to go to a branch of this restaurant chain in Novena, but since we had moved to the East side, we hadn’t had a chance to eat there again. Sengkang wasn’t exactly near us either, but I was thrilled. I had been thinking about where we should go for our next local adventure, and there it was. Knowing Alex loved riding the LRT, we slotted this activity into our plan and headed to Sengkang.
Our first destination was Sengkang Sculpture Park—a place I would never have known about, and even if I had, probably wouldn’t have visited—without Alex. I think that if we didn’t have a child who loves adventures, my husband and I would rarely leave our apartment except to eat. The thought of leaving our comfy flat already makes us tired, and our favorite activities would simply be spending entire days reading books, drinking coffee, using the internet beside each other, and talking about nerdy things. I think the universe gave him to us so we would get the heck out of our flat and see the world.
But that doesn’t mean we hate the outdoors. Once we actually step outside and explore, we genuinely enjoy ourselves. There’s something peaceful about wandering around together as a family. Still, weekends feel precious, and for tired middle-aged couples like us, nothing sounds more restorative than resting, eating, and sleeping at home.
But this would have been unfair to Alex. When he grows older and life becomes tougher for him, we know these memories of exploring new places with us will strengthen him. So off we went to Sengkang Sculpture Park first!
Alex loved that place. His approval of it exceeded my expectations—I mean, sculptures—but there he was, running, jumping, and imagining all sorts of games with them. One game he played repeatedly was “The Floor Is Lava.” There was a spot where we could walk around a bunch of slates, and Alex jumped across them, pretending to escape from flowing lava. Soon, he asked us to join, and suffice it to say, we were both very tired after about 10 minutes of jumping across those slates. Later, when dinner time drew near, I was simply ravenous, something I hadn’t felt in a while.
But no, dinner wasn’t coming so soon. We headed to Sengkang Riverside Park next on this journey. Stay tuned for next week!
