A damaged bridge, its massive hole revealing a protruding skeleton.

Hitobashira is an ancient practice of burying humans alive in a building structure, typically inside pillars and walls. This custom originated from a belief that the intrusion of man-made structures into nature might provoke the anger of spirits and deities dwelling in the vicinity. When disruptive events such as floods or earthquakes occurred, hitobashira was performed to pacify these supernatural forces. This ritual was also thought to imbue buildings with magical protection, ensuring their strength and durability. The practice was especially common in large construction projects, such as palaces and bridges.
