Pasir Ris Park is one of my favorite places in Singapore. I love greenery, and the park is filled with it. Of course, the best spot there is the Pasir Ris Park Mangrove Boardwalk.

It’s the perfect place for someone like me who loves nature but isn’t quite outdoorsy enough to trek through muddy, waterlogged tidal forests without proper trails or walkways. The place has raised boardwalks where visitors can leisurely stroll while being awestruck by the surrounding forest.

I first learned about mangrove trees from watching the anime One Piece. There was an arc where the main characters arrived at the fictional Sabaody Archipelago, which had lots and lots of enormous mangrove trees. Silly as it sounds, I actually expected real mangrove trees to be just as gigantic and felt slightly disappointed when I discovered they were much smaller in real life. Still, seeing them in person was exciting. With their branching woody roots branching above the muddy ground, these trees looked unique.

Alex was mostly indifferent to the trees, but he loved climbing up the bird-watching tower and relaxing by the river. He was especially excited when he spotted a monitor lizard swimming through the water. Before the trip, my husband and I made sure he understood that there would be a lot of walking, so he was prepared. His main interest that day was riding a shuttle from Downtown East mall to Pasir Ris MRT Station. We told him this activity would come last, so he would need to be patient.

We didn’t explore every corner of the park because we wanted to be mindful of everyone’s energy levels, including our own. Even so, the time we spent there was very pleasant. Surrounded by so many trees, the park didn’t feel nearly as hot as we had expected. We spent about an hour in the park before heading to Downtown East mall for lunch. We actually walked there, and it wasn’t that far.

My husband and I were hungry from all the walking by the time we got to the mall. Alex, however, became completely distracted after spotting a small train and was far too excited to notice his growling stomach. Naturally, we let him enjoy the train ride first before having lunch afterward.

Not surprisingly, all of us attacked the dishes we ordered for lunch quickly. The last activity of the day was the shuttle ride. Alex picked a seat right behind the driver’s seat so he could see the fuel and speed meters. Knowing how much he loved the bus’s sliding doors, I made sure to film them closing.

Everything went smoothly that day, and we’ll definitely come back to Pasir Ris Park someday.
