An illustration of Kinnara, a half-human, half-swan celestial being

Kinnara (male) and kinnari (female) are mythical celestial beings with a hybrid appearance of humans and birds. They have the head, torso, and arms of a human and the wings, tail, and feet of a bird, typically a swan or a peacock. In Hindu mythology, they are described as half-human, half-horse beings, but the human-bird form is more widely recognized.

The myth of kinnara and kinnari is deeply rooted in many Asian cultures. Their sculptures can be found in Buddhist temples and pagodas, notably in Cambodia, Myanmar, and Thailand. In mythology, they are featured as divine beings who remain eternally youthful despite their long lifespans, which extend for thousands of years.
