A skinny, goblin-like creature

Laman lupa is a broad term for earth spirits in Philippine folklore. These invisible beings live underground, making their homes underneath fields and hills while forming their own communities. Highly territorial, they dislike humans intruding on their land. Farmers must offer gifts and seek their approval before planting crops in areas where these spirits reside. Otherwise, laman lupa are said to destroy any crops grown without permission. A similar ritual is required at harvest time to keep them appeased.
