Ba Jiao Gui (China)

A ghostly woman carrying an infant, standing under banana trees

Ba jiao gui are known as banana ghosts as they live in banana trees. They are typically depicted as women dressed in a white or a red gown, often seen cradling a small infant in their arms.

According to superstition, there is a ritual to exploit these spirits to win a lottery. The ritual involves tying a red string around a banana tree trunk and securing it with a nail driven into the tree. The other end of the string is then attached to one’s own bed. This act is said to torment a ba jiao gui, forcing her to provide winning lottery numbers in exchange for her freedom.

However, amassing wealth in this manner comes with significant risk. The tormented ghost would hold a grudge against the person and wreak vengeance on them once she’s set free.
