Kosodate yurei are the restless spirits of mothers. Most of them died during pregnancy or childbirth, and they linger due to their intense desire to protect their children. Legends of kosodate yurei exist in both China and Japan, and despite minor variations, they generally follow the same storyline.
A mysterious, pale woman bought candy (sometimes another type of sweet snack) from a store for seven days. On the seventh day, the store owner discovered that the woman was actually a ghost, and that she had been buying the candy to feed her child, who had been prematurely buried with her corpse.
The story has a happy ending, with the infant rescued.
