Aswang is a generic term used to describe shape-shifting evil entities in Filipino folklores. There are five main types of aswang: vampire aswang, visceral-sucking aswang, werebeasts, witches and ghoul aswang. Out of the five, only the ghoul aswang prefers eating corpses, while the other four eat flesh, blood, and organs from the living. Yet, they will also eat the dead if their preferred food source is not available. During the daytime, aswang typically appear as ordinary humans, with some depicted as attractive looking. However, at sundown, they morph into various beastly and humanoid forms to roam the night and hunt for their prey.
Although they have supernatural powers, aswang are still vulnerable to ordinary physical attacks, and are especially fearful of pointed objects such as sharpened bamboo and knives. Strong-smelling items such as garlic, salts, vinegar, and spices are also said to be effective against aswang. These entities are best subdued while they are in human forms as their monstrous shapes allow them to use supernatural powers. If you have enjoyed this post, please subscribe!
