Ao Ando (Japan)

A pencil illustration of Ao Ando

Ao Ando is a yokai associated with a ghost-story telling ritual called Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai. To start the ritual, one hundred candles are lit inside blue paper lanterns known as andon. Once the preparations are set, the participants would take turns to tell ghost stories throughout the night. At the end of each tale, a candle is extinguished, gradually enveloping the room in darkness. Eventually, there’s only one candle left. When this last candle is doused, and the room falls into complete darkness, a terrifying yokai, born from the accumulation of fear experienced by the participants, materializes and kills all the players. Because of this superstition, most Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai games end before the last candle is put out, so Ao Ando will not be summoned.
