A hungry ghost with a long black tongue squatting in front of a food stall

Kowai are gluttonous ghosts with bulging, bloodshot eyes, drooling mouths lined with rows of sharp teeth, and long red tongues that loll out hungrily.

In life, kowai were humans with the same voracious nature. They ate greedily and would even snatch up other people's portions while never sharing their own food. In death, they became kowai, perpetually famished yokai whose hunger is insatiable no matter how much they eat.
