A monster with a rotten, fly-infested appearance applying makeup to a beautiful woman’s mask placed on a wooden pole.

Hua pi gui are man-eating, female ghosts that disguise themselves as beautiful women by wearing the skin of their victims. Each night, these ghosts remove the decomposing skin of their last victim, apply makeup, and carefully paint delicate features onto it. At dawn, they wear this skin to lure unsuspecting men. True to their nature, their name translates to painted-skin ghosts. Because their stolen skin decomposes over time, hua pi gui need to consume human hearts to preserve it.
